What I Read in June

Do you know what the term bonk-buster means? Apparently it was a frequently used term to describe “bodice ripping” novels circa the 1980s, especially those written by a cadre of novelists including Judith Krantz. I plodded through one during June, and a classic aughts chick lit novel.

I cannot recall what possessed me to purchase I’ll Take Manhattan by Judith Krantz; I likely read that the book was emblematic of the excesses of the 1980s, upon which scooped it up immediately as I am completely obsessed with the decade of excess. Unfortunately only a portion of the book took place during the present time, which was the eighties. It jumped around telling the story of the Amberville family, owners of a Manhattan-based publishing empire which rivaled Conde Nast. Thoroughly entertaining though; I understand why it was so popular at the time of the release.

I also read The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. Yes, I am about ten years behind on the chick lit. It differed from the movie more than I expected; it was darker and had less of a feel-good ending. I liked it more than I liked the movie, but I didn’t love the movie so it isn’t saying much.
