Currently Enjoying Vol. II

Lately, I have been rewatching old seasons of Summer House, in anticipation of the Carl / Lindsay broken engagement. Call it Scandoval-lite. You need to know where to came from to get a sense of where you are going and though I stopped watching Summer House since season two, I wanted to be educate myself on preparation for the anticipated drama in the latest season.

I recall seeing Twitter users having a ton of opinions about Hannah Berner. What stood out to me about her freshman and sophomore seasons was that she made tennis her personality. Did you know she was internationally ranked? I cannot remember specifics because I…lost interest once she began talking stats.

Me? I suppose I should not talk. I did not go beyond Snoopy Tennis, a program brought to the community of Brunswick, Maine by the local Department of Parks and Recreation. I distinctly recall enjoying it more than Peppermint Patty Softball. The tennis courts were tree-lined where the sun beat down on the softball fields. The tennis coach requested that students repeat outfits to make remembering names easier. I committed to wearing my white shorts with loopy yellow flowers for the summer on the court. As for my softball wardrobe, it was as chaotic as the wild pitch that hit me in the face that summer.

While I have fond memories about learning to volley a ball, for some reason, that was my sole summer taking tennis. Looking back, I wish I continued the sport at least until I had the autonomy to say no more. Nevertheless, I find it enjoyable to watch and am seeking lessons for my oldest. He has endless energy and only soccer isn’t cutting it.

I recently spent a summer afternoon in a dark movie theatre watching Challengers. Such hype around the movie and I understand why. The costume design is everything, the plot is something, and the knee injury shot? I had to look away.

Below is a round up of tennis popping up in pop culture and where to watch them. I know I will be rewatching a few during the tail end of my maternity leave. After the media recommendations, tenniscore pieces because even if you aren’t ranked, doesn’t mean you cannot dress like it.

I don’t know that any recent movie has caught such sartorial buzz such as Challengers. Tenniscore is the Barbiecore of 2024. I love all of the rich lady tennis coach pieces but my favorite costume design elements are the Chanel espadrilles and the Cartier watch.

Wimbledon fell into a slew of aughts movies like Elizabethtown and Garden State; I do not know why I classified them all together, but that changed once I bought the movie on iTunes while abroad in Kazakhstan. Wimbledon did tenniscore before athleisure was even a thing.

Does anyone else recall the 90s television sitcom Phenom? It starred Angela Goethals (the sister from Home Alone with the “les incompétents” line) as a teenage tennis player, and Judith Light as her mom. It aired on AFN while my family lived in Italy and as it was the only option for 8 pm on Wednesday nights, I watched it.

I cannot find Phenom streaming anywhere and trust me, I dug for it. I will update should that ever change.
