Save for the Napdress, I do not know that any dress has had a stronghold on summer dressing as the Staud Wells dress. This number has been produced in a plethora of colorways and prints, as well as three lengths – mini, midi, maxi – and sleeveless and with cap sleeves. There is a Wells dress for nearly every occasion and in addition to the brand’s website, every brick and mortar department store and strictly digital etailer offers it.
While Staud did not originate this classic dress shape, I argue that the brand did trigger its chokehold on consumers. As a result, brands are producing copycat iterations of the classic poplin sleeveless midi version and I have taken notice, particularly that of a brand that offers it in both tall and petite and in three colorways: bright blue, and both basic black and white.
Both brands’ dresses offer 100 percent cotton lining. The bright blue version from the premium brand, Staud, is 98 percent cotton and two percent elastane, while the comparable color from the big brand is 97 percent cotton and three percent elastane. Both dresses are to be sent through the delicate wash cycle in cold.
Can you tell which one is the big brand and which one is Staud?
