LV x Murakami Reissue

We must be hitting the fever pitch of the aughts comeback because not only did Louis Vuitton reissue the Murakami collection, but it seems as though the collection has straight up sold out.

For those who did not live through the first Murakami collaboration with the storied French fashion house, suffice to say that it was so impossible to get hands on this collaboration that even the film Mean Girls used fakes for the production. That’s right, Regina George wore a fake Louis Vuitton Cherry Blossom Murakami belt and carried the fake matching Pochette Accessoires.

Not fetch.

Despite the collaboration being emblematic (of the tackiness) of the aughts, as pointed out by the Every Outfit hosts Lauren and Chelsea, it was shown as part of a relative-to-the-time chic Spring / Summer 2003 collection. Peep those ladylike satin shirtdresses in candy color and pastel hues, each with a Peter Pan collar, pockets (giving “This dress has pockets!”), and front kick pleat, as featured on the runway and in the print campaign. Contrast that with what people (i.e. celebrities) actually wore the Louis Vuitton x Murakami with: a Juicy Tracksuit and a pair of Uggs.

Most, with the exception of one, of the new handbag shapes do not hit for me, reason being that they are primarily of a minimalist shape. While these minimalist shapes are very of the waning quiet luxury variety, the textiles decidedly are not. In an Epi leather variety, the pared down shapes would absolutely make sense; however as a part of this reissue, they do not.

then and now

Like Chelsea and Lauren, I missed out on buying the first collection as I was, you know, eighteen years old and did not have the disposable income. This time, as opposed to the Every Outfit hosts, I would buy from the collection; however it seems to have sold out across all of the styles. I put in a notification request for the handbag shape that I find to be the most eclectic and most true to the original collaboration in terms of leather detailing and hardware from the bunch.

Can you guess which one I activated a Notify request for? Chime in below!
