I remain unimpressed with this dress. I did not love it then, and I do not love it now.
the j.crew meadow cotton dress
I bought this dress, and four others, to wear last summer during that one month that my husband went out of town. I was solo with two kiddos and needed five really easy dresses that were foolproof. While I have been wearing the two linen shirt dresses – same style, different colors – on repeat even this summer, I have not loved the other three to bring them into this summer. Until, that is, I tried to rerun this dress. And after these photos, I changed out of the dress.
I just did not want to wear it. It felt so uncomfortable.
The reason it feels uncomfortable is threefold. First, smocking is not my favorite, as I have tweeted ad nauseam. I think we are going to look back on this trend and it will smack of pandemic and near post-pandemic. It is stretchy but so clingy that it is not necessarily comfortable, triggering memories of toddler clothing. While I love a voluminous sleeves, I am not a fan of the puff sleeves. It is just giving, well, toddler. Lastly, the back zip closure feels constricting. It only zips down to the bottom of the shoulder blade. Why I kept this dress despite all of the things about it I do not like, maybe I was so panicked about managing two little ones on my own and I was just desperate to find a few styles that I could wear through the month? Maybe it was on final sale?
It is definitely going in the Postmark pile though, that is for damn sure.
