I procured my first issue of Teen magazine in August 1994. Let’s be clear, I was not a teen at the time, rather still an elementary schooler. I do not know why or how I convinced my parents to buy it for me. Suffice to say that a subscription to the now-defunct periodical as well as market competitor, Seventeen, followed.
I distinctly recall circa 1998, one of the style pages in the front half of one of the two magazines featured a pair of Dr. Scholl’s sandals. Up until this point in my mind, the brand’s signature product was the selection of insoles available at drugstores everywhere. This style page blew my preconception out of the water because the featured Dr. Scholl’s sandal was that of a cool periwinkle translucent jelly. I wanted those sandals so badly!
Soon after one of the girls in my dance class wore a pair of Dr. Scholl’s into the studio. They were not the translucent periwinkle jelly colorway and material but even those of the neutral leather upper variety made an impression on me.
Still, I have never bought or worn a pair of Dr. Scholl’s sandals. That might change soon as Free People collaborated with Dr. Scholl’s and released the most on trend collaboration in celebration of the heritage brand’s century anniversary. And it only took me a mere quarter of a decade to actually think about committing after initially clocking them.
Even better? They are marked down over fifty percent via the Free People channel.
