On Sleeveless Turtlenecks

Sleeveless turtlenecks had a major moment at the end of the 1990s. This then-basic item was a staple in many a woman’s wardrobe, including a teenaged Lucinda! I felt the style was so flattering no matter the figure of woman who donned it.

This past winter I watched Gilmore Girls. One episode a night. The Pamper Pirate enjoyed watching it along with me. I enjoyed that too, but also taking notes on Y2K trends that I wanted to incorporate into my wardrobe of today. I noted Lorelei sporting a sleeveless turtleneck and I became cognizant that the style was missing from my present day closet.

Upon watching an old episode of vintage NBC’s Must See TV series Just Shoot Me, I was reminded of the sleeveless turtleneck by one of the most hilarious characters to ever grace the small screen, Nina van Horn, played by the incomparable Wendie Malick. The character was a former model in the image of Janice Dickinson, with a penchant for sleeveless shirts. When I watched the series when it was on the air, I was in high school and identified the similarities between Wendie Malick’s tall and lanky frame and my tall and lanky frame and if a sleeveless turtleneck looked great on her, then surely it would look great on me, right?

I came to collect a few from what I would now consider more economically friendly labels but were then-staple brands, Gap and Old Navy. From the former, I had a silk stretch knit light pink with cream tipping at hems and from the latter a black linen knit. I am proud to say that I had the foresight to pick out items that were timeless; I would wear both today!

Even though I am not nearly as skinny as I was during the last time I wore a sleeveless turtleneck, I imagine that the right size would still be flattering. I never miss double floor arms day at Barry’s, don’t you know?
