Leave Your Mark

last read…

I began reading Leave Your Mark: Land Your Dream Job. Kill It in Your Career. Rock Social Media. by Aliza Licht the day before Independence Day on a series of two flights to our vacation destination, my parents’ house. It is a yearly tradition that we visit the home I grew up during July Fourth and the days before, after, or both. This tradition dates back to before we married, in fact the first time we visited for the holiday was the first time my now-husband met my mom and dad. While it is also tradition to spent as much time outside as possible, I also relished my time indoors for a moment to read.

I am going to have to start a new book for the flights back, because I intently digested Aliza Licht’s in its entirety shortly 24 hours after initially opening it when I sat down in my plane seat. I wish there were more of it, specifically the part that discuss a career transition to a different industry. I constantly doubt that I ignored my inner voice and subsequently allowed myself to get pushed into a job in which I excel, but I no longer feel as much passion for as I once did. Being a thirty-something mid-career professional, I face a few more challenges than Ms. Licht did when she realized her intended career and therefore declared major at the University of Maryland (GO TERPS!) was not the path she wanted to follow.

Leave Your Mark… is flush with valuable To-Do’s, Don’t You Dare Do’s, and Insider Tips, all gleaned from Ms. Licht career at several publications and eventually the Donna Karan Companies. Would I read it again? Yes. I am certain that I will revisit the book when I need a shot of professional inspiration. Should you read it? Absolutely. Consider it the book to read if you have not yet reached the point in your career that Lean In feels applicable on every level.
