I found the best coat and it comes in a pallette of colors and the tall size range. When I wear it, compliments abound…but something is still off about it.
the j.crew topcoat in italian double face
Over the past decade-plus, J.Crew has progressively decreased the number of outerwear styles it offers in a tall size range. This year, the tall size range coats is limited to a long topcoat, the new version of the cocoon coat, and a car coat. It is utterly disappointing.
While I did not shop coats last year, I bought a juicy pink one in 2023, a vivid green one the year prior, and a bright orange one the year before that.

I love acid color outerwear; you get the picture. Literally, just look at the above photos. I will say that the long topcoat of 2025 is unlike anything they have offered in tall in recent years and I don’t have anything like the muted shade of blue in my outerwear closet. The color of which is sold out in the tall size range. It even sold out in my size before I was able to snag it in my size by setting a bookmark and incessant stalking.
The coat is not incredibly warm but it is perfect for the autumn temperature in the 35 degree Fahrenheit to 50 degree Fahrenheit range, pending outfit layers. Fiber-wise the shell is 75 percent wool, twenty percent lyocell, and five percent cashmere. Other note: Unlike the three coats in the photos above, this coat is unfortunately not lined. As this coat is 450 dollars, that is…unfortunate.
I am wearing this coat in a size 14 tall. It is perfect for layering atop of bulkier pieces.
